Air Compressor Installation Guide

Apr 24, 2022

1. Selection of installation site

The selection of the installation site of the air compressor is the most neglected by the staff. Often, after the purchase of the air compressor, they can find a place at will and use it immediately, without any prior planning. Such a random result will result in the failure of the air compressor in the future, difficulty in maintenance and poor air quality. Therefore, a proper installation site is a prerequisite for the correct use of the air compressor system.

(1) Choose a wide place with good lighting to facilitate the space and lighting required for operation, maintenance and repair.

(2) Choose a place with low air humidity, less dust, fresh air and good ventilation, and avoid water mist, acid mist, oil mist, dusty and fibrous environment.

(3) According to the requirements of GB50029-2003 "Code for Design of Compressed Air Station", the heating temperature of the compressed air station machine room should not be lower than 15℃, and the temperature of the machine room during non-working hours should not be lower than 5℃.

(4) When the air inlet of the air compressor or the cooling air inlet of the unit is set indoors, the indoor ambient temperature should not be greater than 40°C.

(5) If the factory environment is poor and there is a lot of dust, pre-filter equipment must be installed to ensure the service life of the air compressor system parts.

(6) When the air displacement of a single unit is equal to or greater than 20m3/min and the total installed capacity is equal to or greater than 60m3/min, lifting equipment for maintenance should be installed, and its lifting capacity should be the same as that of the air compressor unit. The heaviest part is determined.

(7) Reserve passage and maintenance space. According to the requirements of GB50029-2003 "Code for Design of Compressed Air Station", the width of the passage between the air compressor unit and the wall is a distance of 0.8 to 1.5 m according to the size of the exhaust volume.

2.The basics of an air compressor

The foundation of the air compressor should be built on hard soil, and the foundation level should be smoothed before installation to avoid vibration. If it is installed upstairs, anti-vibration measures must be taken, otherwise the vibration will be transmitted to the downstairs or cause resonance, which will easily cause harm to the air compressor and buildings. Generally, the vibration speed of the screw air compressor is below 11.2mm/s (belt drive) and 7.1mm/s (coupling drive), so no special foundation is required. Platform foundation on the bottom area of the press to facilitate sewage discharge.

3. Cooling system

The water quality standard of cooling water for water-cooled air compressors shall comply with the provisions of GB50050 "Design Specifications for Industrial Circulating Cooling Water Treatment". When softened water is available within the enterprise and the system is economical and reasonable, softened water can be used as the circulating water in the system. The main purpose is to avoid the chemical reaction of calcium, magnesium and other ions in the water due to high temperature in the cooler, and finally form scale in the cooler, thus affecting the cooling efficiency of the cooler. The cooling water pressure is generally between 0.15 and 0.4MPa, and the cooling water outlet temperature should be kept between 6°C and 10°C greater than the inlet temperature. The cooling water inlet pipe should be equipped with a filter screen, and the inlet and outlet pipes should be installed with pressure gauges, thermometers and stop valves respectively.

The air-cooled air compressor must pay attention to its ventilation environment, and the air compressor should not be placed near high-temperature machinery or in a closed space with poor ventilation, so as not to cause the exhaust to be high temperature and shut down. If it is used in a closed space, air inlet and exhaust equipment must be installed. The air inlet is located in the lower part of the machine room, and the air outlet is located in the upper part of the machine room to facilitate the circulation of cold air. In general, the air intake and exhaust air volume must be greater than the air compressor cooling and exhaust air volume.

4. Power system

When distributing power to the air compressor, the correctness of the power supply voltage must be ensured.

According to the power of the air compressor used, select the correct power cord diameter, and do not use small power cords, otherwise the power cord will be burned due to excessive load and high temperature. The power cord must be a multi-strand copper-core cable, and one phase of the three-phase four-wire system is the ground wire.

The air compressor uses a set of power system alone, especially avoid using it in parallel with other large power consumption systems. Otherwise, the main motor of the air compressor may be overloaded and shut down due to excessive voltage drop or unbalanced three-phase current. Special attention should be paid to power air compressors. And the power supply network load should be uniform, the voltage fluctuation is within ±5%, and the three-phase voltage unbalance is allowed to be within ±1%. There must be no connection point in the middle of the power supply cable from the power distribution cabinet to the air compressor.
